The disk will be a: when you
boot from it,

I also forgot to reboot into MS DOS from the floppy..I was still booted from w98. Focused too much on the details not enough on the procedure as a whole....

I had the pathnames right then remembered that load command after the Device= command was bad. I wouldn't even of tried it if Device=worked had I been booted from the floppy.

So your braino wasn't as bad as my since my understanding was that there was 1 command line for config.sys and 1 for autoexec.bat. Load command was just an afterthought attempt. Not being booted from the floppy was the real braino.

DOS has a real bad attitude, doesn't it <g>

I didn't even get a chance to load those cd driver lines. I went to boot from the floppy that had the config.sys that I copied to it, as well as all the other files you specified. While dos was loading I got a quick list of errors in the config.sys file. I was able to see listed lines 13-18 and line31 as indicated errors in config, sys. There may have been more but the screen goes by too fast. Then the next screen holds with:

Path not found - :\command.com
File not found - extract.exe
File not found - readme.txt

Insert w98 Startup Disk 2

I was able to boot into ms dos with the floppy before I added config.sys and the others. At that point it had command.com, drvspace.bin, io.sys, msdos.sys on it.

The f8 key method of swiching to dos also does not appear to be working but the restart in MSDOS method does.

Do ihave to reconfigure config.sys or reloadit from the w98cd?

Good thing Sean is away..he'd be literally dieing with laughter.....

Spots...ZP

Once you've booted, see if you can access the CDROM.
Try D: and E:. D: should be the other hard drive
and E: the cd if you've done it right and I understand
your configuration. If not, you'll get an error
during bootup.

I opened A:\ config.sys and autoexec.bat with Wordpad? and put in the 2 commands. Rebooted and..... to my utter amazement.........A: BOOTED THE MACHINE......Then I put in a cd... to myy completely utter amazement.... A: READ THE CD.......

The cd is letter D: ... just like from w98 boot, I hope I,m not booted from 98. Can't be.. BIOS is set for A then C which is NT which doesn't have MS DOS and I'm definitely in MS DOS. E: is an Invalid Drive Spec .

When you say D should be the other drive, which is Formated NTFS, can FAT16 (msdos) see NTFS. I know we've covered that.. but my brain is like a plate full of turnip at the moment<g>

Clarence

Edit BTW your discussons on partitions are excellent and I'm devouring every word....please keep them going.....I shouldn't be pestering Spots for a few hours at least.. so he can give the partitioning debate his full attention<g>
