OT Greetings! Lurker here...

I have been following the discussion here with much interest (although much of it goes over my head). I'm trying to put together a long-term buy-and-hold portfolio of perhaps 12 or 15 stocks to ride the coming (current?) bandwidth explosion and have been trying to learn about this area and am considering many stocks (including ATHM). I thought that perhaps those on the thread might be able to help with their expertise.

In order to help me think about this market I divide it into four levels and partition those companies into those four levels. Please be aware that I have no particular knowledge about these fields and thus my labeling of these levels and my partitioning of companies into these levels may be grossly inaccurate. These are my four levels:

1 Components (e.g. BRCM, CIEN)
2 Equipment Makers (e.g. CSCO, LU)
3 Bandwidth Companies (e.g. QWST)
4 Services (e.g. ATHM)

Below are listed my current likes for each level. Also listed our candidates that I have not purchased either because they seem expensive currently (strictly on a historical basis) or because I'm still investigating them and haven't decided whether they are a good fit. Any suggestions for ones I may have overlooked or cautions on what's there would be appreciated.

1: Components
------------------
Uniphase [I guess I should call it JDS Uniphase now]
Ciena
Level One Communications

Candidates: Broadcom, Vitesse Semiconductor

2: Equipment Makers
-------------------------
Cisco

Candidates: Lucent, Northern Telecom

3: Bandwidth Companies
------------------------------
Qwest
Metromedia Fiber Network

Candidates: Global Crossing, Winstar Communications, Loral

4: Services
-------------
Candidates: ATHM

Thanks,
gue
