and I don't think I said that - but merely that it's
all too easy to tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps - when it's (for
many) far easier said then done.

What an understatement. For everyone it is much easier said than done. WE are not all born equal and none of us has equal opportunity and I don't think it is government's business to give us that. Equal standing before the law yes (and we don't achieve that but we are far better than elsewhere).

Smarter people earn more money, should the government subsidize those who are not as intellitually fortunate? Why then can't they help me who wants to play professional NBA basketball but I was born 5'9". Its not fair, I want the government to help me, I've been shortchanged!
