Street, I have a 22 foot Chris-Craft walkaround with a 200 Mariner outboard on a bracket. Its really more of a Florida boat than a Northern Calufornia boat but it does catch salmon and halibut!

PS Im sure you've heard this one before but: The two happiest days in your life are the day you buy your first boat and the day you sell it! I dont agree, but it does become somewhat of a money pit...especially in a saltwater application.

A lot of you questions are almost philosophical.
I love boats, and I want the best.
Get the best you can live comfortably with. Don't make it such a financial strain that you regret it sitting there doing nothing most of the time.
If you are going to keep it on the west coast, you can probably get some deals in the new areas just north of St. Pete. I've heard there are some nice places to park it.

I once thought a 45' Hatteras sat too shallow in the water...

I can't tell you which boat is right for you, and more than I can tell you which investment strategy is right. You NEED a boat that is up to whatever the task is.

I like sailing also. We are renting a 36' westsail to join some friends in the Bahamas the last 2 weeks of July. This year, I think we are up to 12 ships in our fleet. Check it out, the Banks & Shane 20th anniversary group.
