Samsung Group Plans to Increase Facility Investment to $3.4 Billion
Dow Jones Newswires

[Now it must be true because it is in the WSJ! <G> -- Duker]

SEOUL, South Korea -- Samsung Group, the country's second largest conglomerate, said Saturday it will raise facility investment to 4 trillion won ($3.4 billion) this year, up from 3 trillion won in 1998.

The group will boost investments in such businesses as Rambus dynamic random access memory chips, thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays and the Internet this year, a Samsung Group spokesman said. The latest plan is part of the group's restructuring plan announced in late 1998.

Samsung expects sales to reach 105 trillion won in 1999, up 3 trillion won from the previous year, while expanding its overseas sales to 22 billion won from 20.2 billion won, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the group plans to reduce costs such as wages and other expenditures by 1.1 trillion won to 33.6 trillion won this year amid continuing restructuring efforts.

Local conglomerates are cutting costs and streamlining their businesses in a bid to raise efficiency and competitiveness. South Korea requested a $58.35 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund in late November 1997 at the height of the country's financial crisis.
