Rights are immaterial, however, if a society wants to be told what to do, when to do it and how to do it, and if the perception is that the individual is subordinate to the State.

Even in limit cases, I differ. The rights are not immaterial, although the society may attempt to make itself so.

This, however, is strictly an opinion.

<Just because Jefferson was wrong in owning slaves, does not mean that the concept of rights is not valid.>

In modern thought, a RIGHT seems most often to be used in a universal sense--i.e., that ALL humans should be afforded the same rights. If that is not true, then it is not really a right, is it? More like a privilege, for a certain segment of a given population.
