Global PC Shipments Rise 15.3% In '98: Dataquest

SILICON VALLEY (Nikkei)--A total of 92.92 million personal computers were shipped worldwide in 1998, up 15.3% from a year earlier, according to a recent survey by Dataquest, a U.S. market research firm.

The steady rise was due largely to brisk sales in the U.S. and Europe, which account for 65% of the market. In the U.S., shipments soared 18.8% as the ratio of households using the Internet climbed to 37%. PC shipments are likely to top 100 million this year for the first time, the survey predicts.

Compaq Computer Corp. maintained the largest share of 13.8% in global shipments last year, followed by International Business Machines Corp.'s 8.2%, Dell Computer Corp.'s 7.9% and Hewlett-Packard Co.'s 5.8%. Dell's PC shipments rose 64.9% from a year earlier, the survey noted.
