Francis, Thanks for your kind words... At last I found the UK company I was referring to in post # 310, which looks similar to AIMS... Dixons launches free Internet service By Scott Wilkinson 22/09/98 HIGH Street electricals store Dixons is launching what it claims to be Britain's first free Internet service. There are no sign-up or monthly subscription charges, potentially saving Net users up to £160 a year. Subscribers will simply pay for local phone calls. The software needed to connect to the offer - known as Freeserve - will be given away in Currys, PC World and Dixons' mobile phone arm The Link, as well as Dixons shops from Wednesday. It is thought the launch has been brought forward to beat BT's new Click service to market. Next month the UK's biggest telecoms firm will be offering surfers a per-minute access deal. Users will be billed an extra 1p for every 60 seconds they are online. Both BT's and Dixons' services are billed as fully loaded. Freeserve will feature a portal site with quick access to established content, unlimited e-mail addresses and five megabytes of Web space for personal sites. Lycos's search engine will be included while Planet Online, owned by electricity producer Energis, will act as the Internet Service Provider. Dixons' free service, which will be funded by sponsorship and advertising, comes ahead of Richard Branson's plan to offer free Net access via his Virgin Net firm. Earlier this year Canadian company X-Stream made its UK debut with a service that involves downloading special software from the Internet to gain free access.
