Christine,

Perhaps I misunderstood her. I thought she meant that the sweater and the medal made her feel closer to her deceased father and she felt safer with them because she remembered his presence and of course when he was there she would certainly have felt safer as a little girl.

We all need mementos of our loves and lives. I carry a uniform button of a great grandfather -- an owner of 400 slaves, a wounded Confederate officer and my namesake -- on my keys. When I am about to do some risky deed, I rub the button, and try to be prudent, but very, very brave. The eagle is almost rubbed away, and I'm still here. I have a badge of my service, and a medal won as a child for being the best cadet. I wear a medal my father won around my neck. I trust him most of all. I carry pictures of my wife and lover and my grandchild. I am surrounded by my talismans (talismen?) to protect me from evil. They seem to work so far. Nothing evil has ever happened to me yet.

Christine,
<<I am quite sure the earliest cave people
had talismans>>

Oh no! The cave people myth again. There never were people living in caves!
