LITTLETON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999--

-- Wireless Optical Link Allows Gigabit and Multi-Gigabit Data
Transmission up to One Kilometer --

NBase-Xyplex, a division of MRV Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:
MRVC), today announces that their new data communications product, the
Wireless Fiber Driver, was selected Best Wireless Product at the
ComNet '99 trade show in Washington, D.C. This new product provides
wireless industry firsts in both distance (one kilometer) and data
rate (multi-Gigabit). The Wireless Fiber Driver combines WDM
technology and wireless transmission to distribute ATM, SONET and
Gigabit Ethernet to a record distance. The multi-gigabit optical link
requires no permits from the FCC. Used when links need to be
established quickly or when fiber is unavailable, the device
represents a breakthrough in wireless connectivity.
The Wireless Fiber Driver provides significant savings to
customers. Running new fiber can cost between $10,000 and $90,000 per
kilometer. Access charges for a gigabit connection to the public
network are also prohibitively expensive. Therefore, the Wireless
Fiber Driver has a relatively short Return-On-Investment when compared
to these alternatives.
Requiring only a line-of-sight and mounting location, the link
can be installed quickly. It uses standard network connections and can
be attached to switches, routers, PBXs and other devices to form the
link. Using the device a CLEC, ISP, government agency or enterprise
can rapidly deploy a network backbone infrastructure at a fraction of
the cost of laying fiber in metropolitan areas. Instant and low-cost
deployment of network links provides a competitive advantage in CLEC
environments, and improve service to users.
The Wireless Fiber Driver is expected to ship in April of 1999,
with pricing and ordering information available in March.
With a track record of several industry firsts, including the
first 10/100 autosensing switch, the first Gigabit Ethernet networks
and the first multi-protocol access server, NBase-Xyplex is continuing
to build on its commitment to smarter networks. Through an intuitive
vision and a passionate commitment to provide customized and
comprehensive enhancement capabilities, NBase-Xyplex possesses a full
complement of fiber driven switches, routers and access server
products that take networks farther and go faster than ever before.
With outstanding manufacturing capabilities, global service & support
and strong channel relationships, NBase-Xyplex offers a bright new
world of unlimited connectivity providing leadership in networking for
the next millennium.
