Vixel Delivers Unprecedented Speed and Reliability For Enterprise Applications With New Fibre Channel Switch

BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999--

Vixel 8100 Switch Provides Superior Connectivity and Seamless

Scalability, Raising the Bar for 8-Port Price Performance

Today Vixel Corporation, the industry's leading provider of Fibre Channel interconnect solutions, announces the release of the company's next generation true-fabric switch, the Vixel 8100.

As the newest addition to Vixel's established line of Fibre Channel products, the Vixel 8100 offers IT managers a cost-effective starting-point to implement fast, reliable, and scalable switched-Fibre Channel networks.

The Vixel 8100's interoperability between switches and hubs builds on existing architecture to enable full-speed Fibre Channel networking. Drop-in switching achieves the simplest possible migration from an arbitrated loop to switched-fabric, eliminating the need for reconfiguration of other components, to deliver maximum speed and scalability to Fibre Channel-based storage networks. The Vixel 8100 will be available in April through Vixel's strategic OEM and distribution partners and is currently being evaluated by early customers.

"Fibre Channel technology is key to storage area networking. No other technology delivers the combination of speed and functionality," states Robert Gray, research manager for storage networks at IDC Research. "Vixel's aggressive pricing for the new 8100 switch helps expand the Fibre Channel market. It also positions Vixel now as a full connectivity Fibre Channel supplier from GBICs to switches."

"The Vixel 8100 leverages our superior, industry-leading interconnectivity solutions and establishes a new standard in price-performance by offering switch technology at a price significantly less than the competitors," says Greg Olbright, CEO of Vixel. "Our customer-tested technology and system-level expertise enables us to offer products that are reliable, manageable, and interoperable across the entire Fibre Channel network."

Because management of the storage network is critical to successful implementation of the SAN, Vixel integrates SAN InSite(tm) software as a standard feature of the Vixel 8100. SAN InSite is the industry's only application providing end-to-end management for the entire Fibre Channel interconnect. Comprehensive status, control, and advanced diagnostics for arbitrated loops as well as switch fabrics under a single management umbrella deliver a superior level of serviceability to the Vixel 8100. The user-friendly SAN InSite easily configures switches and hubs, and quickly identifies, isolates, and recovers from interruptions in the Fibre Channel network.

Key Benefits of the Vixel 8100: -- The Vixel 8100's drop-in switching feature delivers the advantages of dedicated bandwidth to devices that aren't currently fabric- ready, making it possible to move from a pure hub environment to a switch and hub environment without changing other components in the network.

-- Easy deployment achieved through flexible configuration for loop, point-to-point, or interswitch topologies.

-- Complete management of the end-to-end connection within the storage network via Vixel SAN InSite software offers the only umbrella application in the industry able to manage hubs, loops switches and fabric switches.

-- Symmetrical line-speed switching delivers full 200 Mbps, full-duplex, and sustained maximum performance from any port to any port.

-- Flexible, hot-pluggable, GBIC-based components support field configuration and re-configuration.

-- Full-fabric support for large, complex configurations via simple name server and state change notification.

-- Fully non-blocking architecture and buffering for up to 32 maximum size frames per port allows maximum sustained performance.

-- Zoning as a standard feature provides the highest degree of security. Zoning allows disparate operating systems, resources, or departments to attach a single switch with communications restricted to the assigned zones.
