I'm sure someone will soon comment on whether the numbers quoted are accurate, but even if they are, remember that the IDC market share number is in units, not dollars. There were huge sales of under $1000 PCs to consumers for Christmas. The profit margins on those units are marginal at best. Dell still sells mostly to large and increasingly to medium and small business customers and gets much better margins even at the same price. Also their average selling price benefits from in increase in the percentage of high margin servers, laptops and storage, which contribute less to the number of units sold.

GVTucker,..Re:.Can anyone either support or refute the following statement made this morning by Ashok Kumar--

I guess the market is judging these comments today! CNBC also reported some fishy numbers last week but no one clarified exactly the product (PCs, Servers, Notebooks, Workstations) nor the market (US or Worldwide, etc.).

Market knows better than Mr. Kumar. <g>

Lee

Hi GVTucker... Dell slipage?

Kumar is referring to quarter to previous quarter, which does not take into account seasonal differences, like Xmas consumers which Dell does not target like Compaq.

Also, as mentioned, these numbers reflect shipments as opposed to revenue.

But, Kumar does have a point, although there are many different interpretations of what it means. Here is an excerpt from a Reuters news release I got from Yahoo!.

"In a statement, Compaq focused on its sequential gains in the fourth-quarter versus the third-quarter of 1998.

Compaq's global market share grew to 15.4 percent, up from the third quarter's 14.4 percent. Compaq's U.S. market share
grew to 18.1 percent from 15.8 percent in the third-quarter, while Dell's share slipped to 12.8 percent from 14.1 percent."

Also, note the report said "US market share".

In my opinion, Kumar's statment carries no weight.

Jon :)
