They don't even have "monopoly" businesses.
Del doesn't, but Cisco does. you have to build routers to Cisco's standards. That's why they are a true "Gorilla." Their lock is not as good as MSFT, but it is as good as Intel's. This is just not understood. And don't underestimate Dell. I have made more money on Dell than any other stock I have ever owned, and "it ain't over."
Take a look at this chart.

Read a story about Bill Gates in which he states that MSFT may have to make an acquition of an internet even though the valuations are
outrageous (or something like that).

What does that mean to me? For one, MSFT will probably prefer to make stock deals if at all possible instead of using up that cash. In that scenario, what would they do? My guess is that they will try to do whatever they can in order to push up their own valuations.
Maybe try to push up the PE to 100 or so. I know it sound high but it sure would help in making acquitions of internet companies.
Right now traditional companies have a hard time making the acquitions due to the internet valuations. MSFT wants to get around this problem and this is one way to do it. For example AOL has no problem acquiring companies and hurting their share price (expect today). AOL usually goes up on such announcements.

Just some thoughts---I could be totally off base of course.

MSFT can do something about the PE if they want--announce a major stock repurchase etc....
Maybe this means that they won't issue equity put warrants but so what.
