Tony and thread,

From Larry Wachtel's closing market commentary (2/1/99, Prudential Securities):

"...gain in Dell Computer and a three point rise in Cisco helped offset some heaviness in Microsoft and Intel. The big chip-maker was hurt by reports that gateway 2000 might be embracing the micro processors of Advanced Micro, which rose over a point.

Internet stocks hit some understandable selling, with Yahoo off 18, Broadcast.com off 15, EBAY off 15, and America Online off five. The Wall Street Journal carried a feature article on the gradations of risk and reward in the wild Net stocks.
"

May be the four horsemen will eventually get the iNut $$$$.

Tony,
"What do you mean. I thought just changing it to a default equals off state was no step at all, at least according to the privacy extremists."

I'd say turning it off is a step and if Intel can wipe the CPU clean with a flash then I don't see a monetary problem but Intel needs to nip it in the bud before a bad reputation ensues. Intel should go to the least common denominator....wipe the CPU clean and offer a flash if a company or someone WANTS to have the ID ability on their chip AND give them the ability to turn it off and on.
As far as chips already shipped they could issue a flash to take it off the chip and give the boxmakers a small credit.
Case closed...

You may call these privacy groups extremists but this goes much deeper than that. Besides, sounds like you are using a Carville/Hillary tactic, called anyone who wants Clinton impeached a right wing wacko! <G>
