Just out of curiosity, what programs are you running to use so much memory? I have a machine with 192 Mbytes that I use for FPGA place and routes but this is a very rare application. If there is a commonly used ram hog, I would like to know.

The main ones I am familiar with are scanner/photo programs. Note that scanners have resolutions giving 30 Mpixels for a 8.5x11 scan while digital cameras only have about 1 Mpixel for a photo.
