Hello IOM lovers ... I just bought IOM, the zip drive and not the stock. Here's my stake on the future of IOMEGA. It is on life support for another year.

Like I said, I bought a zip drive parallel with the 6 disk kit. Not a bad price and should go lower in the coming months to fend of competition. The SONY drive will not kill the ZIP ... yet. But at a certain price point, buyers of new PC's will ask themselves, for an extra $100, would it pay to put the Sony super floppy instead of the regular floppy. As this 'extra' becomes lower and lower and as more manufacturers embrace the cartridge and it goes to below $10 per, which I anticipate by next year, then why would anyone bother with the ZIP.

Well, I just bought one, because the Sony drive is still expensive. But in another year, when I'm ready to buy a new PC, it's going to have the Sony drive built in. Then what will I do with the ZIP. Don't forget, this is a sure way of exchanging data with the other ZIP's out there. Question is, will ZIP owners switch? I'm willing to bet on that. They have made full use of their ZIP drives and it's time for an upgrade. No new disks will be purchased and this will surely hurt IOMEGA. more than the floundering drive sales.

Darrell, I just got to thinking about the appointment of the two new Iomega Corp. board members... Turns out the Mr. Bernard Puckett was a vice pres. at IBM with extensive experience in business strategy and in acquisition and merger activities. Sounds like IOM will need to have someone on the board with this type of experience, esp. with last year's purchase of Nomai and the acquisition of intellectual property and capital equipment from Syquest about to take place this year (following the completion of terms of bankruptcy court ruling).

The other fellow, Mr. Robert Seidl, taught at West Point during the same time period as when Jodie Glore was a cadet prior to his graduation in 1969. An old college contact and a person that may have impressed Mr. Glore back then. He has varied and broad experience in the executive levels of several large firms so would be useful in the further expansion of Iomega Zip and Clik! drives into new areas of the storage marketplace.

Is it possible that these guys could become new executives within Iomega? Also, when a company is interested in acquiring another company is it possible that one of their previous executives (IBM) might be put on the board of the company being considered prior to any actual proposal of a buyout being made... in this case IBM might be looking closely at a possible acquisition of Iomega? If I remember correctly, there have been rumors about IBM having had behind-the-scenes contacts with IOM over the past year. Not sure if any of these ideas would hold water, but it is interesting to speculate on why they are expanding the Board of Directors at Iomega at this time.
