Ed Staiano did, indeed, say (in a rather blase manner, I might add) that Iridium satellite losses could be at the rate of one every couple of months. Here's a question for those on this board who might know: What expected rate of loss have Globalstar engineers factored in? Since the Iridium losses include only one for communications reasons (the rest being for thruster, momentum wheel, etc.-type failures), one cannot conclude that Iridium's "in-sky" switching is the cause of the failures; does Loral's satellite design somehow avoid such mundane weaknesses as momentum wheels and thruster glitches?
