RE: 3Dfx/STBI , CC, & Creaf

Something else from the CC that caught my attention was that the actual design win with Gateway was using cards manufactured by Ensoniq. Now, I don't know about you, but I would not buy an Ensoniq card on a bet. Furthermore, if I remember correctly the volume for the OEM sales of banshee were in the low hundred thousands (anyone verify, or do I have to listen to the CC for the fifth time). I was a little supprised at hearing that as I thought more of the 1.5 million banshee's would have been OEM sales.

I also agree that it sounded like there was some "situation" with how the Gateway OEM played out in the quarter and also that 3dfx's relationship with Gateway was still strong. This would also fit with hearing on the boards over the last few weeks that the "generic AGP" part AKA Creative (ensoniq) Banshee was no longer available.

And on the Quantum rumor/news... 4x V2... impressive. One hell of a large/hot card though I would imagine. Two things I would like to see happen: 1) 3dfx keeps a close working relationship with Quantum. and 2) They hire the driver guys over at Metabyte. Those ReFlex drivers for the V2 and Banshee are absolutely the best, as well as having the eyescream (lcd glasses) support.

Creative's relationship with Gateway as a sound card supplier is probably what convinced Gateway to take a chance with Esoniq's Banshee card in the first place. (Also, the Banshee card was probably cheaper than STBI's TNT card and much better technology than the ATI's Rage Pro card, which was starting to show its age.) But, if Creative really did fumble on this deal, it will take them longer to build their reputation as a reliable supplier of quality graphics boards for OEMs.
