With its stock trading near a 52-week high in the United States,
ORACLE CORP is hoping to bring that same magic to Asia, where its
Oracle Japan unit is gearing up for its IPO in Tokyo on Friday.
"Given what's happened in the Japanese stock market in the last
eight years and given the economy, one would think, this is goofy.
Why are you doing this now?" Jeff Henley, Oracle's chief financial
officer, said in an interview in Chicago on Tuesday. "Despite the
fact that this is not a roaring market, the Oracle name over there
is still magic," Henley said. Five million shares of Oracle Japan,
or about 7% of the total outstanding, will be offered in the IPO,
