Elmer - Sanders WAS WRONG ! Again !

He told a little lie to the analysts at the conference call.

Maybe he didn't want to tell them any more lies today !

Pentium III now supported by Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. has shipped a new version of its DirectX multimedia software that now supports the multimedia instructions built into the Pentium III. The new version of DirectX, version 6.1, automatically recognizes the Pentium III.

In addition, the software release includes the first incarnation of DirectMusic, a program that allows a computer game to dynamically control music encoded in the MIDI file format.

When the need to calculate geometry and lighting of 3D objects is called for, DirectX 6.1 will route those tasks to the Pentium III. The Pentium III's new multimedia instructions, known among the OEM community as the Katmai New Instructions, have been optimized for geometry and lighting among other tasks. The Pentium III will then pass its calculations to the graphics chip to render the data.

Microsoft software for the Pentium III was originally expected after the chip's introduction; in its fourth-quarter conference call with analysts, the chairman and chief executive of rival Advanced Micro Devices had predicted Pentium III support would wait until DirectX 7.0. The existing DirectX software, however, already includes built-in support for AMD's own multimedia instructions, known as 3DNow!

The software release is another step in ensuring that Intel's Pentium III launch, slated for the end of this month, is backed up by a host of ready applications. Intel also hopes to avoid the historical example of its MMX instructions.

The MMX instructions were supported by selected software makers with Intel's help, but also hurt by the lack of readily available software tools to develop further MMX applications.
