Lets do this again and slowly, If I short a stock ...

(selling shares I don't have but have to have the $$ value in my account to cover the short sale) ......

If I short a stock, my cash is tied up to cover my position and I hope to buy back cheaper to "cover" and keep the difference as my gain.

So........ how to I "cover" and realize the "gain" if the stock never trades again? Does my broker free up my cash now?

Just trying to learn.
