Since mid-Nov 98 USAT has risen from below $5 to close at $15 on 12/30/98. This NASDAQ BB co. is in the process of qualifying for the NASDAQ listing. USAT will offer flat-rate unlimited long distance service at $20/$30/$60 per month. Currently in full operation in California. Current plans will expand coverage to major cities by mid-January, and 90% coverage of US by end of first Qtr of 1999. International coverage to follow. I have personnaly used their service in california, and the quality was excellent. USAT's web page is usatalks.com ----------------------------- Background - company press release, summarized: USA Talks.com, Inc. provides ... superior long distance service at a flat rate by utilizing these proprietary technologies: Greater compression of digitized data. Using proprietary compression technology USA Talks.com, Inc. (USAT) is able to send a much smaller "packet" of digitized information through the Internet and have the information decoded on the receiving end without significant loss. In making the "transmission highway" of digitized data more efficient, the company is able to offer a "toll quality", non-echo, more efficient and less costly long distance service. Speaker [voice] verification. USAT's voice verification technology allows ... the user to access the system using the user's own voice. Speaker verification acts as a safeguard to unauthorized use, as cents per minute long distance services are primarily accessed by pin code or telephone line, which allows access by more than one user. Priority routing. Another proprietary technology, creates a priority routing system to send digitized voice data through the packet switch network, resulting in no detectable latency, "stepping on words" or loss of conversation. Most Internet long distance services offered today are plagued by latency (i.e. these companies utilize routing techniques similar to e-mail routing which could take seconds, minutes, or hours for e-mail to be received) which translates into poor quality transmissions. ---------------------------------- All comments welcome... | ||||||||||||||
