I agree with your statement about the risk assumed when putting in a second order. However, I talked with ETrade about this problem. If you look on the open orders screen it will indicate that the order is "cxl" - now one should be able to assume that this means the order has been cancelled. Apparently not. It appears that when you put in a cancel order, it automatically places the "cxl" symbol on the open orders screen - thereby giving the impression that the order has been cancelled.

I understand fully the risk of entering a second order prior to receiving confirmations. I just think it's important that ETrade try to clarify the status of orders on their open orders screen.

Of course, that would require that they constructively listen to feedback from their clients --- something I doubt they do!

BTW Here is a thought for everyone. During the stressful times of the past two days, I am sure that some of you (us) have taken the frustration out on those people who staff the phone lines. It has been my experience that most people who staff the phones are very professional, hard-working and do their best to help us. Perhaps now is the time to let these people know that we do appreciate the job they do for us everyday on the phones - they are not responsible for any glitches which may happen!

I once got a confirmation of the cancellation.
And then the NEXT DAY I got a cancellation of the cancellation...
The stock had dropped in the meantime.
To rub salt in the wound, I immediately got a margin call notice because they overdrew my account!
