Why so? I would not go that far, my point is that career thieves commit thousands of thefts, while murderers typically only that one.

Murder and forcible rape or torture are as bad as it gets. The distinguishing characteristic of these crimes is that you can't do them halfway. Theft - it exists in a continuum. How many of us have taken ballpoint pens home from work? Most. How many of us have stolen a car? Anybody?
