The following may bode well for JMAR's Precision Instrument Division: biz.yahoo.com Wednesday February 3, 6:30 pm Eastern Time Quantum CEO says disk drive market strong SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 3 (Reuters) - The rebound for computer disk drives shows no sign of slowing down as demand for personal computers accelerated in the fourth quarter and remains strong going into 1999, Quantum Corp. Chief Executive Michael Brown said on Wednesday. ''Pricing declines have abated and demand continues to stay very strong for the desktop business,'' Brown told investors at the NationsBanc Montgomery Securities Technology Conference. Quantum is the biggest seller of desktop computer drives with a 21 percent market share, Brown said. The disk drive industry is coming out of a six-quarter slump in which disk drive makers were mired in a glut of inventory and got whacked by the Asian economic crisis. But now, Brown said, inventories industry-wide are at their lowest levels in two years. He added that the hard disk drive industry should grow 11 to 12 percent in the first quarter versus a year ago. ''We're very enthused about what we're seeing,'' he said. Quantum also is the largest maker of ''DLT'' drives that store massive amounts of data, and Brown said he expects the DLT industry to grow 25 percent this year because of increasing amounts of digital content and accelerating sales of powerful computer servers.
