S3 wins Savage4 contract

Graphics computer chip maker S3 Inc. (Nasdaq:SIII) said Monday that it won a contract to supply a personal computer equipment manufacturer with its new Savage4 graphics-enhancing microchip, marking a major accomplishment for the company. "We expect this family of products, Savage4, to return us to profitability in the second half of this year, (and today's deal) is a clear indication we are moving along as planned," said Chief Financial Officer Walter Amaral. The contract calls for S3 to ship the microchips to the manufacturer, whose name was not disclosed, in the first half of 1999. S3 called the manufacturer a "top-five PC OEM," and said details on who it is will be available when the computer maker officially unveils its new computer systems this spring. The Savage4 microchips boost the video quality of PC computer games, delivering top quality 3D video and other enhancements. --Reuters
