My only question is about the 'This drive has been set as Read-Only in preferences' message in reference to the original C:win98 on IDE 2.

The read only option is new in PM 4. I believe PM is trying to help you to not make a mistake. An unnecessary level of complexity that has to be pealed away IMO.

You may have meant me to perform from IDE 1. I do have PM on IDE1 but I didn't think it mattered where I used PM from.

You will need PM on IDE1 if IDE2 fails and you want to clone back the partition.

Do you suspect this message is because I was operating from the same OS I was also cloneing?

That is what I believe. They make an assumption that you do not want to alter the drive you booted from. You can change the preference if you want to. It does make some sense to me. It is probably part of the 'native to NT/Win95' concept. The older versions required a boot to DOS or MSDOS mode to work. This is because the harddrive can have no open files when it is being altered. PM 4 still exits to DOS for some operations.
