AG. SECRETARY GLICKMAN, EXECUTIVES FROM KRAFT, NESTLE TO TESTIFY AT Y2K HEARING

WASHINGTON, DC (JANUARY 26) — U.S. Senator Robert F. Bennett (R-Utah) today announced that two upcoming hearings of the Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem will explore food industry safeguards against the Y2K computer glitch, a software and hardware problem that threatens the nation's system of agriculture producers, processors, wholesalers, distributors, shippers and retailers. Among those scheduled to testify are executives from food processing and retailing giants Kroger Inc., Kraft, Nestle, Cargill Inc. and Supervalu.

"Americans need to know if we will face empty shelves at the grocery store on January 1, 2000," said Bennett, who chairs the committee. "We take for granted that a head of lettuce grown in California can be on a New York dinner table in 72 hours. Without daily shipments, most cities have two or three days worth of food available through local distribution. It is vital that we know what plans the industry has to keep the shelves stocked."

flatsville,

I note that you're prone to "cold chills" from time to time -- probably most frequently when considering those "pesky interdependencies". Perhaps the following quote from Tom Bridis' (AP) write up of the senate hearings will give you that warm fuzzy feeling:

"[Glickman] promised his agency would work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to distribute food if there were shortages."

Just think, DoA and FEMA working together become food distributors (and processors, too, I suppose) for the greater good. Got that feeling yet.....?
