Don,

We have a difference of opinion on the facts perhaps. We do agree the Nancy Markle didn't write the Nancy Markle letter. After that, there are some significant differences. It's true that there have been some complaints, but complaints doesn't necessarily equate to much. I don't believe that there is any clinical evidence to show the correlation. Here's a few appropriate references on some. You'll find the third reference to be a search over NIH; there have been quite a few clinical studies on the The last one is a clinical study that showed some concern with persons with prior mood disorders. But surprisingly it is never cited by the opponents to Aspartame.

On Aspartame. Ref:
nutrasweet.com
web.mit.edu
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

It seem like Monsanto has the FDA, MIT, Beth Israel Hospital, the AMA, American Diabetics Assoc and countless others paid off! This really seems to lack credibility.

The AHP/MOnsanto merger was killed at the last minute...true. But the widespread understanding at the time was that it had to do with control of the two merged companies by the CEOs...Irreconcilable differences between control, investment and management style. Nothing to do with Aspartame. I could find the link on this but it is less than significant.

Yep, Monsanto is willing to sell Nutrasweet, my understanding is that the patent is due to expire shortly and Monsanto has a patented replacement in the pipeline. Similar business strategy to the expiration of the Roundup patent and that practiced by many other companies with products whose patents expire.

Re: " Chemical Week 11/18 reported they'll peddle the Prosilac/Dairy unit also." So what! Monsanto buys and sells more than a few business units. I could list a few myself. But it doesn't mean anything.

Re:"The American Soft Drink Association's protest against aspartame was published in the Congressional Record, 5/7/85."...I guess they got over it didn't they? Or do we add the Association to the list of groups paid-off by Monsanto?

Re:"In January Canada barred Monsanto Prosilac, as it was in the ECU in '94. It's Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, injected into cows to increase milk production. The milk contains much higher levels of pus and IGF-1 [insulin growth factor-One] a hormone whose links to cancer..."

This was a rather interesting construction....leads the reader to believe that Canada's rejection of Prosilac had to do with a linkage to cancer....I think the inquisitive fat checker, will find that Canada rejected the application based primarily on incidences of infected cow udders and the concern with the possible excessive use of antibiotics in treating that condition. If my memory serves me, Monsanto challenged some of the data in the Canadian rejection and is/will submit an appeal. I'm not aware of any rampant plague in the US of infected cow udders, perhaps there is.

From Bloomberg:
"Bloomberg News
January 15, 1999, 7:48 a.m. ET

Ottawa, Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Monsanto Co., one of the
world's leading agricultural biotechnology companies, didn't win
approval from the Canadian government for a bovine growth hormone
because of concerns over the health of cows, the Wall Street
Journal said. The hormone, which generates global revenue of $200
million a year, increases the milk production of cows by 10
percent to 15 percent and has been used in the U.S. since it was
approved in 1994, the newspaper said. The Canadian government
said the hormone was safe for humans, although it raised
questions about the increased risk of udder infections in cows
injected with the hormone, as well as infertility problems, the
Journal said."

Followed by:
ST. LOUIS -- Reaffirming that a Monsanto Co. (MTC) drug is safe, the nation's top health officer has rejected appeals from critics to pull the genetically engineered product from the market. Donna E. Shalala, secretary of health and human services, said the critics of BST -- the drug that increases cows' milk production -- have raised "no new scientific concerns" about the drug's safety. That means the Food and Drug Administration, which reports to her, "does not intend to remove the product from the market," Shalala said in a letter sent Thursday to Vermont Sens. Patrick J. Leahy and James M. Jeffords. After a slow start, the drug, sold under the brand name Posilac, has recorded higher sales each year. Last year, it produced an estimated $200 million in revenue. Canada's top health agency, HealthCanada, rejected BST last week. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) "

How is it that there aren't any clinical studies (double blind) that can show any of the claims/accusations being made? There have been plenty of attempts...see the nih link...that have shown that no relationship exists.

Best Regards,
Jim
