My job does not afford me the luxury of researching a company to the degree some people on the Dell thread have, and therefore it is certainly not how I choose to position myself.
In my compliance role of a flagship 60 man and 3 billion in assets office, I am nevertheless in the enviable position of gauging public sentiment better than most. Suffice it to say that at the retail level, Compaq remains far and away the dominant play of the industry, while Dell is grossly underowned.
That was the basis of my observation that sentiment will one day turn in favor of Dell, and until that day, Dell will continue to outperform Compaq like it has since virtually day one.
I have obviously struck a nerve here with this infantile bunch, but that in itself is another "window" into Compaq's soul. I love the role of "agent provocateur", and like Pavlov with his salivating dogs, I will continue to illicit emotional reaction as often as I desire for my own amusement. The postulation thus far is that Compaq appeals to rednecks, biggots,and "jajajajajajaajaj's", while Dell appeals to rich, thinking investors.

Compaq is good; Dell is better

"jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaj"

A subset of the thread seems prone to antagonistic insults when they are frustrated by their in ability to debate the issues on the basis of facts.

Jim, please post a link to any post by you which contains facts. Heck, find me a post where you post a link to back up your "suspicions." You don't try to debate here, and that's my problem with you. Anyone here will be happy to discuss what is right or wrong with CPQ at any time. I know I don't like trading insults with you, it's a waste of our time and everyone else's. Here is one of your typical posts:

CPQ still sells to the channels more than it sells to the end user.
Also, they have no direct way to get the sales by the retailers or by the VAR channels.

I am not concerned with short term perturbations in the market price.
A detailed analysis can be done when the 10-K is available.
If the channel stuffing is confirmed then we will be able to predict CPQ stock price with more precision.

The IDC data supports the channel stuffing hypothesis but it does not prove it.


No facts, no mention of any rumors. No explanation of how you arrived at your "suspicions," no links to suport them. And you call this "debate?"

Yeah, you've told us that a hundred times. Who cares? A lot of people over here are rich too, but we don't have to remind you every day.

BTW, don't forget that your prediction for CPQ's earnings was the worst on SI. But the members of this thread will help you learn to read CPQ's financial statements so you can get a better feel for how the company is doing if you are really interested in the company (which I seriously doubt).

Jim, here's the CONTEXT PC data for western Europe to supplement the US and worldwide data you already have from IDC. Unfortunately, since this data is free is doesn't break down the unit volumes by server, desktops and portables. However, I think you'll see that Western Europe is growing at a tremendous pace [21.1% in 1998] and will continue to do so.
