Now that this new strain is killing older people, maybe we will see some action from the regulatory front.>>>>>>>>>>LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - A public health emergency has been called in south Wales after an aggressive strain of meningitis claimed three lives and put schoolchildren in hospital.
A virulent strain of Group C meningitis, which has only developed in Britain in the past three years, strikes quickly and often fatally. Health officials have embarked on a major vaccination programme.
John Owen Jones, health minister for Wales, told BBC radio the virus was a medical enigma. ''Within a day or two, a person who was completely healthy can become fatally ill. But why this occurs in some places and not others, medical science just does not know.''
About 1,700 students and staff at schools around the town of Pontypridd have been vaccinated against the deadly brain virus.
Gareth Gould, 15, died on January 31 after a rapid deterioration in his health. A 55 year-old teacher at a nearby school and a 66 year-old woman have also died.
Gould's mother described how her son slipped away in just half an hour. ''As the doctors were treating him Gareth smiled at me and gave me a thumbs up telling us it would be OK,'' she said. ''But within 30 minutes all his organs had shut down. ''
Meningitis outbreaks are not unusual during the British winter. Earlier this year, a bout of the killer bug claimed 14 lives in the northern English county of Yorkshire.<<<<<<<
