Here is the original Press release from Congressman Peterson's office, News Release Congressman John E. Peterson Pennsylvania's Fifth District 307 Cannon House Office Building l Washington, DC 20515 l 202-225-5121 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jen Bennett February 5, 1999 202/225-5121 CONGRESSMAN PETERSON ACCEPTS INVITATION TO SPEAK AT NATIONAL HYDROGEN ASSOCIATION MEETING WASHINGTON-- Congressman John Peterson (PA-05) has accepted an invitation to give the keynote address at the National Hydrogen Association Annual Meeting. The meeting is scheduled for April 7-9 at the Sheraton Premier Hotel in Vienna, Virginia. With participants from 15 nations, the upcoming meeting is expected to be the largest American meeting to address Hydrogen Energy as a viable alternative for America's future energy needs. Peterson's invitation to speak came as a result of his support for federal policy that encourages development of renewable alternative fuels, such as hydrogen. Peterson plans to discuss the importance of alternative fuels to secure the future of America's energy needs. Additionally, he will address the importance of including research and development of hydrogen fuel as part of the federal budget. "The Presidential Administration agrees that we must increase our level of commitment to clean, efficient technologies. So now is an optimal time for Congress to strive for development of alternative fuels that are renewable, safe for the environment, and will make America less dependent upon foreign nations," explained Peterson. He further explained that the only bi-product of hydrogen was clean water. The U.S. Department of Energy already operates a hydrogen research program, but that the program, according to Peterson, is under funded. "If the President is serious about his commitment to alternative fuels, I would encourage him to direct additional funds toward hydrogen, which has already proven to have feasible applications." Hydrogen is currently used by NASA in the space shuttle, by the Department of Defense, and is used as an enhancement additive in fossil fuels such as gasoline to help them burn more efficiently and cleaner. Hydrogen has also been effectively demonstrated in cars and power plants. "America has fallen far below the technological curve of other industrialized nations. For example, Japan and Germany already commit millions of dollars toward alternative fuels. For America to remain competitive in a global economy, we must pay closer attention to our future energy needs."
