the MD1000 isn't close in this respect. (I have not yet seen "photorealistic mode").

Actually I do not recall which Alps printer I saw at Comp USA. The output I saw was on plane paper. The printer made several passes to create the print. The last pass seemed to be putting on a gloss coating. I believe the first pass was also some kind of coating for the paper. I believe the printer I witnessed was less than $300. It was probably the MD1000??

FWIW Publishing Perfection publishingperfection.com has Alps printers and supplies..prices are higher than what you have posted.
