Ralph, Yes, I've wondered about morale. Three of my uncles fought in the Pacific, my father just cleared boot camp nearly the day the war ended, and my great-uncle was flying the Hump from India to China bringing in supplies. Unbelievably, all came back alive so the recollections I've been steeped in are probably a little skewed.

Regards, Ice

Ralph:

I second your opinion of Midway being a morale booster. In San Francisco many were worried about a Japanese invasion...a sub was sunk off the coast, we had to use black-out curtains on our windows, rationing, parks converted to military use as staging grounds, the installation of coastal batteries a few blocks from my house...not to mention the getting under our desks during air raid and earthquake drills. Makes a good excuse for my ignorance though...I spent more time under my desk than behind it.<G>
