Jim,

One thing that moves stock prices are earnings estimates.
Let's take a look at the earnings estimates for VLSI and LSI.

I/B/E/S VLSI LSI
1999 0.21 0.72
2000 0.67 1.59
5 yr growth 15% 20%

Zacks VLSI LSI
1999 0.30 0.75
2000 0.60 1.59

First Call VLSI LSI
1999 0.24 0.72
2000 0.63 1.60
5 yr growth 17% 20%

Based on today's closing prices of 9 7/8 (VLSI) and 25 7/8 (LSI),
and using First Call's estimates:

Forward PE VLSI LSI
1999 41.1 35.9
2000 15.7 16.2

When viewed from this perspective, VLSI is fairly valued in
relation to LSI. If business is strong, why isn't VLSI
management guiding analyst's earnings estimates up? If they
did, the stock would move up to discount the better estimates.

One big problem with VLSI continues to be the sorry leadership.
I bought VLSI today at 10 1/8, but it's for nothing more than a
trade. Like others, I'm leery about holding a long term position
in VLSI with Stein at the helm. Sorry to be so blunt, but I think
he is a total idiot and needs to be fired. The Board of Directors at
VLSI should be held accountable for keeping such an idiot in charge
of the company for so long.

Dan

"Semiconductors have since experienced a major upward reversal"

True but VLSI has not participated. For that matter, INTC has seen major gains as well while VLSI continues to sink. Again, Stein continues to demonstrate his incompetence at the helm. This translates into little confidence in the future earnings of the company and thus a lower share price.

"Just as LSI will never see 10 again, VLSI isn't likely to see 7"

For LSI to see 10 would be a 60% slide. For VLSI to see 7 would only be a 30% slide.
