ALTERNATIVE FUEL TO HELP SOLVE BEIJING SMOG WOES

Alternative Fuel Systems Inc. of Calgary has signed a deal with the
city of Beijing to study the feasibility for natural gas vehicles
in the smog-choked Chinese capital.

Municipal authorities have been urged by the federal government to
develop and implement a pilot project to convert vehicle fleets in
Beijing from gasoline or diesel fuel to cleaner burning natural gas.
The plan includes establishing natural gas service stations throughout
Beijing, Alternative Fuel said Monday.

In an effort to improve local air emissions, Beijing intends to converts public transit fleet-5,400 large buses, 10,000 microbuses and
60,000 taxis-to alternative fuels. The pilot project will start in the
first half of 1999 but any conversion would take place over several
years.

Alternative Fuel said it will co-ordinate the pilot program with
assistance from Montreal-based energy giant Hydro Quebec and Kraus
Group Inc. of Calgary, which designs and manufactures natural gas
stations and dispensers.
