Regarding the "crash" of Oct '87, I was a broker with DWR, only 4 years in the business, but with millions of client's $$ at risk. You are very right about the influence of CNBC etc. Most of my clients didn't know about the event until the evening news and even then it did not get the exposure smaller moves get today. People are much more aware/fixated on the financial markets today than ever before. Maybe this accounts for some of the volatility, I don't know?

Dear Lynn,CNBC is a great indicator of general market sentiment! They don't drive the market anymore than CNN drives the political landscape. They report the trends which overtime becomes the realities not vicki vercki. If Joe,Mark, and David are pounding the desk over high internet valuations, they are representing the general opinions of those folks that actually drive the markets. To pick on CNBC because the market is tanking is like Republicans blaming Tom Brokaw for Clinton's unfathomable popularity!I watch CNBC when I can because they give the average investor the best chance at real news with the best analysis available to Joe Q Publik!Don't get me wrong,I think they do have an impact day to day,but the impact they have is the edge the average investor would never be privy to unless these guys were out there doing exactly what they do!We should thank them not excoriate them!
