Name a disaster that has befallen Microsoft, other than the DOJ suit and videotape snafu.

The company has yet to turn the either of those into a success.

What amazes me, though, is that this trial is an utter rout so far. MSFT has done little to show that it HASN'T got a monopoly or that it doesn't engage in unfair practices.
When presented with proof that is INTERNAL, they say "Ooops, that was a mistake" or "We didn't mean that" and it seems to get swept under the rug.
MSFT is clearly engaging in monopoly practices that are anti-competitive....so OF COURSE they can turn disaster into success. They simply dip into their cash and buy some PR!

Alomex,

>>What is the difference between Microsoft and say Lotus or Apple?

Proprietary ownership of the OS that ships on 95% of the desktops!
Microsoft had a steady stream of revenue from DOS and then Windows which allowed it time to "catch-up" feature by feature with Lotus. The key difference is that Microsoft did not have to sell Excel version 1,2,3 to maintain a successful business model.

Apple's glaring mistake was not to ship a MacOS port of some kind to the IBM PC. Since they were not willing to produce low-end hardware at the time, they could have used the PC as their low-end product line. If Gates was a visionary then it was because he realied that you could shrink-wrap crap in a box and the public would not only buy it but demand more, as long as it was cheap.

Cheers,

Norm
