What you fail to mention about public schools is that prior to the fifties and sixties they were controlled by local boards of parents who picked the teachers and curriculum, we still have the local boards but they are totally swamped by state and federal regs and union contracts with Cadillac health insurance provisions. My friends in the local system have no deductible, full prescription, and $5 co-pay dental. The school system also pays the teachers' share of FICA. After they get tenure you can't get rid of them without proving at least child molestation (unless of course they test positive for THC...then they are just crucified).

To compare the local schools prior to WW II to what we have now is a joke.

By the way Catholic and other private schools are PUBLIC schools just like the local eatery is PUBLIC. The government schools are a bureaucratic behemoth that occasionally educates a child on the way to their true goal of keeping the status quo intact.
