Tony...great post...one note...you write

>>You want the best possible latency in your cache(s), which is the first place the CPU always looks for data that it needs. And, the data is there, in the cache, most of the time, say 80% of it<<

Actually, I think that you'll find on a general application load that you're at or over 95% on most modern caches.

You did a great job of explaining a complicated subject while I just got frustrated. The bottom line is that this is a statistical problem (much like trying to determine the precise location of an electron) in which you have to talk about probabilities.

My frustration was based on understanding the probabilities associated with day-to-day stock movement and understanding the probabilities associated with computer performance. One tends toward randomness (note: while there are reports of very high short-term-oriented stock performance, these appear to be outliers) while the other tends toward being a predictable, scientific endeavor.

My best...

Tony,

Thanks! You help me understand the issue a bit better.

BTW, I was reading the AMD thread and Scrumbia's recent ranting on RDRAM- he has always been anti-RDRAM. But there are others out there that are both pro and con RDRAM- only time will tell!

Regards,

MileHigh
