Possibly you are right about that. If so, it would be from the perspective of E*trade. In other words from E*trade's point of view they would have "helped" as many customers as they "hurt" by having no functional back-up system.

But so what? What difference does any of that make to the E*trade customer who actually lost money, and who actually suffered real monetary damages? It wouldn't make any difference. So it seems to me that how many fortunes were lost versus how many fortunes were saved would be merely a point of academic interest, and a matter of concern to E*trade from the perspective of their lost customer base, but other than that, not a point of any particular concern to E*trade customers.
