I don't know much about Barry Diller, but I think this deal leaves him with daily operating control of the much glitzier cable networks (the part that Mario Gabelli thinks is worth the stock price), and leaves USA/Lycos mostly under the management of the Lycos folks. We don't really get Barry Diller, except at the board level. Day-to-day, he will be working on other business.

USA/Lycos is no longer an internet pure play by any means, and my analysis suggests the better way to invest here if the deal goes through is via the USA Network stock.

One of the things that is clear here is that USA Networks is mainly an entertainment company while Lycos is mainly an internet company (duh), and analysts and investors who know something about one of these areas are lost in the other. It's kind of like if Dell merged with a biotech company. Who could figure it out without a bunch of work?

I'm still holding my Lycos, for the moment, but bought some USA Networks. Hasn't worked out yet.
