Which planet do you reside in ? They have been in the mode of "about to be whacked by AMD" for the last 7 years.

Intel went through a period of time where they ceased IA32 core architecture development, based on the idea that IA64 would replace it. During the time that Intel was asleep, AMD went off and designed the K7.

Intel now has several good IA32 designs in the pipeline, but they are way behind K7. AMD will have to screw up really badly this time to miss the opportunity.

Keep in mind that Scumbria is very very slow to catch on. It will take at least another 7 years for him to figure it out <ggg>.
