RE: A competitor's comments.....

Did you see the statement made by CPQ's E Pisser (I can't remember his exact name) reported on CNBC late in the afternoon? He just couldn't stand not taking the opportunity to twist in the knife. Said CPQ and IBM were coming after Dell using the direct sales model, that the pendulum that had been swinging out for Dell had reached equilibrium and was now starting to swing back, etc., etc.

You know, I wonder about the timing of all this. Remember last quarter the day before Dell's earnings announcement CPQ had a big deal news conference about their "new" direct sales strategy. Yesterday was technically the last day before Dell's earnings. Is it possible they were up to something again? It would not surprise me at all.

5fer is a desperate man. Every qtr. CPQ pulls some stunt a day or two before DELL earnings, though usually a misleading spin statement on how well CPQ is doing. He has now stooped to broadcasting to the world 1 business day before DELL's earnings that CPQ has taken away share from DELL. 5fer and the mason are transparent spin masters still trying to disguise their company's declining presence through questionable acquisitions. One would think that Niles, who is a shill for CPQ, would still do a bit better research THAN TO CALL 5FER FOR CONFIRMATION! Nice research! He gets paid for this?

INTC is guiding analysts upward. INTC makes its best margin on the high end. DELL focuses on high end. Is this difficult for analysts to comprehend? Even beaten down co's like MU and SEG say business is rocking. DELL is doing quite well. Period. "DELL is on a tear."

<<due to competitors statement>>...just wondering...is Merrill refer-
ing to one of it's (ML) competitors, i.e., Niles or a competitor of
Dell? I think ML is attributing the downslide to Niles and the other
analyst who cut projected revenues (not that it really matters :))

Mohan - Re. 'competitors' - I think ML was referring to their competitor Robertson Stephens not Dell's competitors CPQ etc. I mean CPQ can hardly estimate their own earnings, much less Dell's...<BG>.

Anyway, to all, a perspective on Growth - 1988 to 1998 revenue and earnings...

In Millions Growth In
Year Sales Earnings Sales Earnings
1988 258 14.4
1989 389 5.1 51% -65%
1990 546 27.2 40% 433%
1991 890 50.9 63% 87%
1992 2013 101.6 126% 100%
1993 2873 d35.8 43% NMF
1994 3475 149.2 21% NMF
1995 5296 272 52% 83%
1996 7759 531 47% 95%
1997 12327 944 59% 78%
1998 13070 (to 3rd Qtr)
(Courtesy PostalGrip of the TMF thread)

An estimate of 5.2 Billion for the 4th qtr would put us at 18,270 for 1998 - a growth of 48%. 5.5 Billion would put us at 18570 - a growth of 50.65%.

So I'm not quite sure as to what people are talking about when they say growth is slowing. It helps to take a slightly longer view than just 1 year as this lot at BBRS seems to be doing. I mean even with their high forecast of 5.5B growth from 1997-1998 is lower than 1996-1997, while a growth of 48% (5.2B) is higher than 4 of the last 9 years - so what exactly is their point?

Re. TA - I read a few posts here that Dell comes down to its 50DMA - according to this chart it seems to follow its 13DMA more closely - not that I use these TAs for anything more than entry points (since I haven't exited yet - :)) And certainly it occasionally does hit its 50DMA - you can pretty much read the chart any way you want I guess. The question is whether it will this time...I don't quite think so which is why I bought some more at 91 1/16 - maybe should have waited - but I can't spend all that much time on looking up stuff during work- <BG>.

At any rate have a GREAT weekend all.....(smiles)... and take care...

Mohan, what a mess!!! Whom do you believe has the most accurate assessment of Dell's position? Lets not forget that Dell only beat their earnings estimate last quarter by one cent. Why should they do any better this quarter??? Lose of revenue growth...is this possible?

Thanks for your viewpoint.

Mohan, I think the competitors Mer is referring to is B/B Robbie Stephens and Smith Barney, not Dell's competitors. They wouldn't dare!

Yep! It is fascinating when Faber has to go to EP to find out what DELL is doing. It is very similar to EP's effort to interfere with DELL's last earnings report. EP definitely is preoccupied with DELL.

Note the analyst's claims that DELL's enterprise sales are off because the corporate customers have completed their hardware purchases and now are spending their IT money on software for the Y2K problem. This is the reason that DELL's enterprise sales are off.
Then look at the enterprise sales for IBM and CPQ and notice the huge bulge in sales for Q4. Either sales are not off or CPQ and IBM stuffed
their channels again.
