Eric: Nothing to get excited about here. The SEC filing was a routine statement of ownership by the Amerindo group, which has been Xylan's largest shareholder for some time. Actually, the most significant thing in the filing is that Amerindo has SOLD a large chunk of its holdings. In last February's filing they showed year-end 1997 holdings of about 27% of XYLN stock, compared with 16.82% now.

Xylan Selected for 10,000-User Network at Seven Veteran Medical Centers

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 1999--Xylan Corp.
(Nasdaq:XYLN) Wednesday announced that the Veterans Integrated Service
Network (VISN7), an association of Veterans Administration hospitals
in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, will build fully switched
networks using Xylan OmniSwitches.
The new networks will expand bandwidth for new applications and
allow communications among the seven hospitals. As a result, the
hospitals expect to offer better patient care.
The project will transform networks based on hubs and routers
into fully switched networks that offer Ethernet or Fast Ethernet to
each user, with ATM OC-3c (155 Mbps) connections to servers. The
OmniSwitch, the only switch with integrated LAN, WAN and ATM support,
will play an important role in the new networks.
"We were facing both a shortage of bandwidth and a need for wider
access to data," said Wiley Stuckey, network information systems
officer for VISN7. "The OmniSwitch provides a solution to both
problems and is integrated for ease of management. Xylan's sales and
customer support worked with us as a team to analyze issues and solve
problems. That support team made this a win-win situation."
Stuckey said the existing networks were running out of bandwidth
due to new graphical, client/server-based applications, and increased
Internet and Intranet usage. The OmniSwitch offered the bandwidth
necessary to solve these problems, and also enabled the hospitals to
reduce training costs because it is a single-product solution.
For WAN frame relay connection, some of the outpatient clinics
use Xylan's integrated frame relay module to connect back to the main
switches at the hospitals.
