I Corinthians 2 1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith would not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. I heard of an evangelist once who read out to his congregation a famous sermon of Jonathon Edwards entitled "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". So profound was the effect upon the original hearers as Edwards preached that many were standing and clutching the pews crying out "Is there no escape!" There were many conversions that day. However as the evangelist read this same sermon centuries later with tremendous enthusiasm some members of the congregation he noticed to his dismay were falling asleep! The best charismatic speaker's message will amount to naught if the way is not prepared by the Lord and the leading of the Holy Spirit. A person simple in speech, with a simple message of salvation who has sought unction from on high can reach out to thousands as the Lord speaks through him. Reaching out to people with head knowledge will tickle the intellect. Going out into the fields of harvest with the empowering of the Holy Spirit will result in the reaping of souls for God's kingdom.
