Did PC sales actually contract in 1998? I think what you mean is that the growth rate slackened. I believe that PC sales did increase in 1998. Furthermore I don't see any reason to believe that PC sales will stop growing.

While it is true that growth in the low end has been stronger than overall growth, I don't see how that is a big problem for Dell. The Dell buyer tends to be a more sophisticated computer user who is looking for a higher performance, better quality system, as opposed to a first-time buyer who is concerned only with price.

Hmmm...looks like I was wrong about Dell.

I guess it's time for the Dellheads to go through the same painful withdrawal as the Iomegans. Dell certainly won't unravel the same way...but it looks like there is no doubt that the market is going to be readjusting its multiple in a hurry.
