We (DELL) didn't get where we are by screwing up now did we? ============================ By Jerry Mahoney American-Statesman Staff Published: Feb. 15, 1999 Fortune magazine, which last year named Austin the No. 1 city for business, ranks Dell Computer Corp. the fourth most-admired U.S. company in its current issue. Dell is the highest-ranking computer company on the annual list, joining technology giants Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corp. in the Top 10. Dell chief executive Michael Dell said the consistent success of the direct model, which has made Dell the fastest-growing and most profitable major PC maker, has attracted widespread attention. "A broad range of business people are beginning to recognize Dell as a leading company," he said last week. "Not just as a company with a good idea but a company that does many, many things well. "I've been pretty amazed in the last six months how much interest there is in the Dell concept, whether it's from automobile manufacturers, or airplane companies or pharmaceutical companies or biotech companies. I mean, you name it, they want to hear from us." Fortune said the ranking of most-admired companies is determined by ballots from thousands of executives, corporate directors and stock analysts who rate them on traits such as innovativeness, products and services, quality of management and employees, long-term investment value and social responsibility. Fortune noted that Dell stock has increased 87,000 percent since 1990. "In the 15 years since Michael Dell began selling computers from his University of Texas dorm room, his company has grown into an $18-billion-a-year business that sells more PCs to medium-sized and large U.S. companies than giants like IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq," the magazine said. H-P, ranked No. 5 last year, fell to No. 18. The 10 most admired companies, beginning with No. 1 General Electric, are Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Dell, Berkshire Hathaway, Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, Intel, Merck and Walt Disney. The companies are also rated by specific industries. Dell ranked No. 3 behind IBM and H-P in the computer and office-equipment category. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
