I have only one lasting regret about this national tragicomedy.

The Republicans utterly squandered a great opportunity to define their party's mission and to groom a candidate for the next Presidential race. Instead, they grew mesmerized by this ultimately abortive campaign of retribution. Duuuudes.

We have all these opinions, public place or not, private place or not. The redefining of alone and is, Presidential ick not being sex, impeachable or not. Monica as a seducer... oops? We have the freaking leader of our nation who gets tricked by a 21 year old fat babe? Maybe Monica should be president.

Go Penni! One thing I heard while sitting mesmerized in front of MSNBC (all Monica all the time) was a talking head remarking that in twenty years we had gone from President Reagan, who so honored the physical space of the Oval Office as sacred to our country that he would not enter it without respectable business clothes on, to Bill Clinton--in other words, from jacket on to pants down!

miss penni, yes I think that Pee Wee was busted in a porn theater. I don't think that should have happened either.

I wonder how different this might have turned out if all of the meetings with Monica were somewhere else, such as a motel room, although I doubt if the president could check into one unnoticed with the secret service standing outside the door with weapons. Which brings up an interesting question. Where else but the White House could he have had an affair unnoticed?

Del

Penni -- "Oval Office a Public Place"

If you really think so, you should try to use it like a park or sidewalk, sit with babies, read the paper, or publicize your political opinions. The Oval OFfice is peculiarly the President's space. Whether he can use it for private sexual purposes is simply a question of whether an official can perform his private deeds in a space exclusively assigned by law to his exclusive use and control. Even Betty Currey cannot enter it without his permission (and probably knows better than to try).

In other public employment there may be other rules. But I believe that Title VII applies to executive branch employees, and the President is not an employee but a branch of the government himself. Another screwup by the founding fathers (like slavery) perhaps, but the law in all its majesty.
