Generally it is fast.....when it is slow..it seems to be the site...I am pulling from...rather than the pulling... cause if I switch to another site..it speeds back up... All I have to say about cable modem is.... If you can get...it.......and if you can afford it..... then GET IT!!! You will not believe the difference! Wow.....downloading a file....you can't even go get a cup of coffee anymore...it is down..as you soon as you stand up!....I am amazed... and being a "techie" since....1980...or so...(showing my age)...I am not that easily impressed.... I always have to have the fastest. Another thing...is we have a "in home" lan...so all the computers can use the ATHM service via a proxy ...which means.....whereas before we had 4 separate modem phone lines (~$18 each)...and 4 ISP services ($15 each)...now we are all on....with no phone lines needed for that....so it is just the $34.50/month....so we ended up saving money....(hey..cool!)... AND if that is not enough......it saves time....as soon as the computer is "on"..it is on the Internet...no....clicking on...waiting for it to dial the ISP, busy busy busy...finally dial....connect....man..could knit a sweater...!)... with ATHM ...just click and wham....onsite! I love it.....so I bought a few shares.....(shy smile..) Mary

Rocketman, we have both ATHM and Prodigy at 56kb. The cable modem is definitely quicker but it's not that dramatic on most applications. Perhaps this reflects the lack of traffic/demand at the Prodigy site and through their relatively underutilized backbone/network. The most significant difference I see, however, is when I download quotes from TC2000 -- a painful process with either dial-up via 800 number or via Prodigy internet (modem). I think TC2000 operates at a slower transfer rate -- I'm not sure what technical problems cause the slow-down. When I do the same download via At Home, it is amazingly quick. Perhaps a more pertinent comparison: I'm comparing SI browsing tonight just to reply to your inquiry -- At Home is definitely quicker but it's not twice as fast. Better but not by any orders of magnitude. We got the cable modem so that my wife could have her own service and it wouldn't conflict with mine (work and personal). I don't see a "killer ap" just yet that justifies the premium, but I'm sure they will be surfacing. I do appreciate it when I'm doing my weekly (or more frequent) TC2000 downloads. Just MHO.
